BEING INCLUSIVE

Recognise and challenge unconscious bias so everyone flourishes

A conference keynote, an INSET day or a cheeky twilight? All sessions can be adapted to suit the audience, the themes that are important to your school and the length of time we've got.

Did you know we all have an unconscious bias?

We’re drawn to people who think, look and behave like us. This can have an impact on how we work with others, teach or lead our teams.

Unconscious bias can also affect the relationships teachers and TAs have with the children in their class. As well as the aspirations they have for them.

Perhaps you’ve heard a teacher explain that a child won’t ever be at the expected level because their parent never reads with them at home?  Or you’ve overheard a group chatting in the staffroom about the next child from that family joining the school?

There’s nothing we can do to stop our unconscious bias. But there are things we can do to recognise biased thinking and behaviours, and create conscious inclusion. Even better, once we notice it, we can challenge it and create more inclusive learning environments.

Here’s what you can expect

  • An interactive, fun and thought-provoking session
  • Explanation of why we have a bias
  • Different types of bias and what these could look like in the staffroom and the classroom
  • The Pygmalion Effect in schools
  • The Power of Pausing (slowing down your thinking and responses)
  • Recognising the difference between diversity and inclusion and why it matters

What you’ll get by the end

  • A greater understanding of the neuroscience behind unconscious bias – no more denying you have it!
  • Strategies to recognise your own and others’ biases
  • Tips to slow your thinking down and challenge any ‘wonky’ thoughts
  • Ways to be consciously inclusive
  • Creative ways to ensure you bring out the best in every child - peer learning
"Thank you for making me reflect on how unconscious bias can affect relationships with pupils, their families and my team. It was a really timely and interesting reminder."
